Good Compliance is Enabled by Good Clinical Planning

Neil O'Flaherty recently highlighted an important point: FDA compliance cannot be an afterthought in a medical device clinical study.  It reinforces an important point that we discussed during our webinar: FDA compliance isn't simply achieved through monitoring or documentation—it starts with thoughtful planning and study design.

From a clinical development perspective, a well-designed protocol not only addresses the scientific and regulatory questions—it also provides investigators and study staff with a practical framework that can be executed consistently across study sites. When studies are designed with both science and operations in mind, compliance becomes a natural outcome rather than a reactive effort.

A few key considerations during study planning include:

·       Develop protocols that are practical and feasible for sites to execute consistently

·       Define eligibility criteria that are clear, objective, and operationally straightforward

·       Design visit schedules and assessments that minimize unnecessary burden while collecting meaningful data

·       Align study procedures with the scientific objectives and regulatory strategy from the outset

·       Engage clinical, regulatory, quality, biostatistics, and operations teams early to identify potential implementation challenges

Successful medical device clinical trials require more than a strong protocol or a sound regulatory strategy—they require thoughtful integration of both. When scientific rigor, operational feasibility, and regulatory expectations are aligned early, studies are better positioned to generate reliable evidence while avoiding many preventable compliance challenges.
